What is consciousness
It seems like a buzzword recently, I hear mutters of consciousness and how to become more conscious, and yet there is still a lot of confusion surrounding the topic, which is why i’m writing this post, to clear up some of the confusion and also give you some insights and techniques to be able to bring a higher level of consciousness to your everyday life. The main problem is that people already think that they are conscious, if this is you, I have to ask you to recall the last time you were were fully aware of your breath? If you’re like me, and most other people, you will realise that you are pretty zoned out for the majority of your time on this earth. Where are you zoned out too? Probably thinking about something in the past or something in the future, basically anywhere except from being present and enjoying the millions of blessings that are available to us in every moment. When you are not being conscious, you are a lot more likely to be influenced by the things going on around you and in a constant state of ‘re-acting’ instead of relaxation, peace and enjoyment.
Eckhart Tolle once said that if you want to save £1000’s in seminars, books and workshops…then you should just train yourself to breathe deeply and become present in the moment whenever you realise that your focus has drifted to the past or future, and this single piece of advice has helped me so much. Whenever I feel myself getting bored, angry or any other of the unwanted emotions, I take a few deep breaths & re-connect with the moment and this simple act can completely change how I feel and it never fails to keep rewarding me.
Real happiness is in the moment
We live in the 21st century and we’re constantly bombarded with adverts of every variety, constantly brainwashing us that we need their specific product to finally make us happy, and the sad thing is that we’ve been programmed so heavily over time, that people think that it’s normal to grind through life, working a job that they don’t particularly like so that they can get that house, car or promotion and finally be happy, but this isn’t the case, we can CHOOSE to be happy in the moment, and feel overwhelming emotions for no reason at all, or maybe even for the millions of reasons that we all have to be grateful for. No matter what has happened in the past, let it go, and whatever may happen in the future, deal with it when it arrives, don’t steal your own happiness by trapping yourself in the prison inside your own head. The present moment is beautiful if we can chill the f**k out and enjoy it for a change…we chase happiness so much that we forget to be happy.
Learn to enjoy a moment regardless of whats happening
When we try to control people and situations, we use so much of our energy trying to control things that we have no control over…no wonder so many people are in a constant state of frustration. I used to think I had to be unhappy, angry, sad or feel out of control when things were happening that I didn’t want, but a magical moment for me was when I realised that I control how I feel, no matter what happens. This is easier said than done and I do find myself still falling into these negative patterns occasionally but I am definitely getting better at taking a few deep breathes and switching into a state of happiness…and that’s what its all about, gradually improving your habits of thinking a little bit everyday, and over the space of 1,2,10 years, you’ll be a different (happier) person.
Feel the moment more
Being a young person with an active social life, i’m tempted by the different sources that are promised to bring us more happiness such as drugs, nights out, new products etc and each time i’ve do, it has made me feel amazing initially and then once that buzz wears off, I end up feeling worse than I did before, so I strongly believe we can’t rely on external sources for happiness, and if we do, we are setting ourselves up for a big crash. What can we do then? I would advise you to catch yourself next time you find yourself tempted by these ‘instant happiness cons’, to just breathe deeply until you feel more relaxed and then really FEEL the moment more, because when you start to see, feel and notice the abundance around you, and to let the state of relaxation flow over you, you will feel a lot more at peace with the moment and you will not feel the need to go and abuse some sort of product or substance to make you happy. Happiness is a choice which is available to you in every moment, not some massive un-reachable end goal.
Get excited by the unknown
We can bring a higher level of consciousness to an array of different situations, and this will not only enrich our experience in unlimited ways, but also let us get excited about things that would normally scare us or make us nervous. Don’t be afraid of the unknown, because after all, you’re a powerful human who creates his own reality…aren’t you? Next time you catch yourself being fearful or nervous, use the techniques already mentioned to become more conscious in the moment, and then think of everything you could learn, everything amazing that you could experience that you’ve never seen before & when you start to look at new situations as opportunities instead of punishment, you never know what you could find or experience. Life should be an adventure, not a constant struggle.
Hopefully you’ve taken a few key points away from this, because if we listen to mainstream media and the people around us, we can get drawn into thinking that life is terrible and not worth living but this is not true, life is amazing in so many different ways and we have unlimited potential waiting to be tapped and never ending opportunities waiting to be taken, and if thats not something to be happy and grateful about, then I don’t know what is. Raising consciousness isn’t an overnight process, it is a life long journey but the rewards are never ending, so why join me in trying to bring a higher level of consciousness to my every day life?
