How many times your day to day life have you got to a crossroad in your head? You know you should do something productive or positive but then the voice in the back of your head starts saying 'You don't want to start with X behaviour today – start tomorrow' or 'Just 1 won't hurt' or 'Something as small as that doesn't make any difference.'
Well if you're like me then you get caught up by situations like this on a daily basis and although at the time it may not seem significant, over time, these tiny improvements and shifts can completely upgrade your life. The way we do something, is normally the way we do everything so if you're the type of person who just does enough to get the job done, then you will always JUST do enough and this then becomes a habit and then you start 'just doing enough' in other areas of your life so be wary of falling into this trap. Be known as a person who goes the extra mile with a smile on his or her face and this is going to be a massive source of success in your life as once you get a reputation for being someone credible who does a job properly, then you automatically become an opportunity magnet.
You don't realise the power of repetition and consistency, do you think you could save £750 with nearly 0 effort or cutbacks? Well if you saved as little as £2 a day, you would have saved £750 over a year and if you start to look at all your micro-decisions in the same way, you start to appreciate how easy it really is to create an amazing life. If you do that extra set on a regular basis, every session, then all of a sudden you start to get the 'extra' results and all because you decided to do an extra set (on a regular basis)
The importance of day to day decisions
People think their long term success is purely down to factors such as genetics etc but it really isn't, not if you have a growth mindset anyway. Let say for example that your goal is to become a millionaire. Most people are looking for the £1million deal or get rich quick scheme and this is the reason that broke people outnumber millionaires massively whereas if you start taking control of your daily decisions then you will start to make real traction on your. For example you could decide each day that you're going to stop yourself wasting that bit of money on stuff you can get much cheaper or even for free at home. You could make the decision to not go out in your car pointlessly and to instead, read a book that will help you pick up golden bits of nuggets from people who have already achieved what you're trying to achieve. A few good books for the would be RICH DAD POOR DAD & RICHEST MAN IN BABYLON. By reading what successful and rich people say about money and how it works, you will internalize bits and bobs of the information but if you do this on a continuous basis, there is only a matter of time until you're thinking and acting like the worlds richest. And if you're thinking and acting like the worlds richest on a daily basis, there is only so long until you start to become richer and accumulate more wealth. People think successful people are just born the way they are, but this is rarely the case. Most successful people will have worked daily towards mastering their craft aswell as taking control of their day to day decisions as they are aware of what you do on a regular basis creates who you are. You can be whatever or whoever you like. You have got to do more than just WANT though, you must work towards it daily – as working hard towards a goal for 2 weeks and then giving up leaves you at square 1.
How to start taking control
Want to start taking control? It's simple. Everytime you get to a moral crossroad in your life where you find yourself having to choose from the fun/enjoyable option and the sometimes more boring option that will benefit you, you have to make the choice whether you want instant pleasure with pain down the road or you can decide to pick the beneficial option that is sometimes painful or boring in the moment but it makes you stronger or smarter down the line and if you can respect yourself enough to pick the tougher option, then you will reap rewards that people who are not as disciplined as you will never have. Do what others won't today – to be able to what others can't tomorrow.
Being conscious of yourself is also a great help, and you can use various techniques such as meditation, yoga, reading or journalling to make yourself more mindful and conscious.
Being conscious allows you to observe the thoughts in your head much easier and just so you understand what I mean, have you ever seen a beautiful chocolate bar and instantly wanted it but then your inner personal growth guru talked you out of it. But then your inner child starts saying to you ''Ooooo it does look nice though'' ''1 bar can't hurt'' and it keeps nagging at you until you give in and eat the whole packet. Well, being more conscious will allow you to control these thoughts much more and you might actually have a chance of winning over the chocolate loving kid in the back of your head. Say no to the free cookies at work, say yes to going to the gym when you don't feel like it, read a book even when you feel like watching reality TV, have the awkward conversation instead of avoiding it by looking at your phone. Start to take control of these decisions and mark my words, your life will completely change from the inside out.
As with anything else, getting started is normally quite tough but once you have started to be more aware of your decisions, you will get a dopamine rush everytime you pick the better option and before you know it, you have built some serious momentum and you are proud of this momentum that you aren't going to start back at 0 just for a little temptation in the moment...are you?
Which goes into the next point of...
Give yourself a why
If there is 1 thing you take from this article, let it be the importance of having a Why.
What do I mean by this? Having a purpose, having a mission, having a life long goal. Because if you do this, you have a reason to push through the pain, work the extra hours, take the risks and get results by any means necessary. Our WHY is to inspire and change the lives of a million people so everything we do is viewed through the lens of 'How is this helping me to reach my long term goal?' and by doing this, it gives me a different level of motivation 'I have to do this and I don't know why' and also, when times get difficult, I can remind myself why i'm even here in the first place. A person who is doing something so his family can eat will push his limits a lot more than someone who is only there because they feel like they have to be. There is lots of content out there about finding your why/purpose/mission and I really suggest you take the time do this as it will have a MASSIVE effect on your life. Here are a few places I personally look to for advice.
An affirmation is basically a phrase that you repeat out loud over and over again and the idea is that if you tell yourself that you smile at stranger 50 times a day, it's only a matter of time before you catch yourself smiling at every stranger you pass. They are a very powerful tool to use and are brilliant as they do not need time set aside solely for chanting phrases to yourself like a madman and they can be done whilst your out running or walking, whilst your driving, whilst your waiting for your bus. Here are our best affirmations for taking control of your decisions/life.
''My daily decisions, no matter how big or small, control the outcome of my destiny.''
''I am disciplined and love working my discipline muscle.''
''I am in control of my life.''
Try out one or all of these in your life today and just stick with it, it may feel strange at first, but after you've got over the original weird feeling, they start to make you feel all fired up and energetic. If you really want to get yourself fired up and in a motivated mood – shout the affirmation out loud!
Once you start becoming more conscious of your daily decision making, you will start noticing how good you are doing or otherwise automatically and start making improvements accordingly – no matter what point you are at in your life, you can improve a bit.
A great way to start making improvements is to write a journal at the end of the day about when your decision making was good and also letting yourself down. Just by noticing and making note of what you've done, you will become much more aware of improvements and where and when your letting yourself down. If you're decision making is really weak and undisciplined around certain people, environments or at a certain time, what can you do to combat this and start acting instead of always just reacting to whats around you.
In conclusion, you now know how much power you do have to create your future and you have a few tools and other links to get you going in the right direction. Seriously, start small today and make a change to cement your new mindset. Have no sugar in your coffee. Say no to a naughty treat. Read a few pages instead of scrolling through Facebook.
Stop letting life run over you repeatedly. Take charge. Step in to your power and start growing.
Get a little bit stronger, smarter, happier and richer everyday and over the space of your lifetime, you will have had an amazing life.
