What is your mental diet?
Your mental diet consists of everything you put into your brain, and whether you realise it or not, your brain is being given thousands and thousands of messages everyday.
Similar to your physical diet, if you eat like a pig, eat large amounts of food that is bad for you and resist salad at all times, then the results you are going to get will not be very good. Whereas if you're putting highly nutritious food into your body everyday and being on guard to make sure any bad food comes no where near your mouth, then the results are going to be much different compared to the 'salad dodger' mentioned before.
Our brain is the same as all other machines in the sense that if you put shit in, shit comes out...but if you put the occasional bit of gold in, then the occasional bit of gold will come out. It's not quite simple as that in this day and age though as our brains are constantly being bombarded with messages from every direction and regardless how much effort you put into being on guard, the occasional bit of 'junk food for the brain' is going to slip through the net. Not to worry though, just as in real life, the occasional bit of junk food in moderation won't do you too much harm as long as you\re looking after yourself the rest of the time, which is why we're going to give a few easy and practical everyday hacks for you to start upgrading your mental diet. After all, we want you all to have a 6 pack brain and to be the happiest version of yourself.
Here are our 3 top tips.
1) iBooks or Kindle
This little hack has made such a difference in my own life and it wasn't something i'd heard about elsewhere, it just sort of came to be as a sudden realisation. We've all been there, 5 minutes on the toilet, 5 minutes waiting for your friend to be ready or you've got 10 minutes to kill before your dinner is ready and if you're like me, and most other people then you whip out your phone without even realising and start catching up on the latest Facebook posts or the latest news and before you know it, the 5 minutes have flown by and you haven't actually been paying attention to the piles of useless information you've been staring at. Thats why things like Facebook are so lethal, they don't cause you any harm in the moment but they steal your time little by little and also dumb you down (But less of the Facebook ranting, and more on how you can use this time to upgrade your life.)
Instead, why not download a kindle app on your phone or use the free iBooks app and each time you find yourself with a bit of time to spare, read something empowering instead of finding out what Sally who you went to school with had for dinner.
It may seem like a small change, but over the space of a year, you could use the time you previously wasted, you could read a handful of books on topics that interest you. Use your time to educate yourself on how to become happier, richer, more fulfilled or literally anything you could imagine. Don't WASTE your valuable time.
2) Learning on the move
If you make this transition, not only will you be less bored on your travels, but you will also be picking up bags of valuable information and inspiration. Zig Ziglar describes this as being a member of the Automobile University as you are using time that would normally be 'wasted' driving or cycling or walking...to educate yourself and improve yourself.
You won't be missing out on anything if you give up on the radio or the news and if you start to replace this information with empowering messages, audiobooks, motivational speeches or literally anything that YOU want to listen to. Not what 'they' want you to listen to. Feed your brain – don't get spoon fed. There is a difference.(Just last week, I decided I wanted to start being better with my money, so I downloaded some content, put it on my phone and listened on the way to and from work and it's a 20 minute journey to, and a 20 minute journey back which adds up to 200 minutes over a 5 day week. This 200 minutes repeated over a year, 2 years, 10 years or even your whole lifetime can add up to some serious work. Make success easy, set up habits and routines that help you to grow without even realising you are.)Could you do this in your own life? It doesn't matter if you walk, run, bike, drive or even fly to work/school/wherever else you are lucky enough to be going. Stop making excuses, start growing and start changing your life.
3) Use Social Media for personal growth
The power of social media cannot be underestimated, you'll have to look far and wide for someone under the age of 35 who doesn't own a Facebook, Twitter or Instagram account, and there are many benefits for owning an account, but there are also a lot of dangers that get hidden and swept under the rug. It's highly addictive and can have you sat on the sofa for hours on end waiting and anticipating the next 'like' as if it's a potent Class A. The lengths people will go to humiliate themselves and others in a starve for attention is becoming more and more concerning with the rise of Highlight Reel Facebook generation. People would much rather make everyone on their Facebook think they have a Ferrari rather than actually going out to make it happen. People only really post their best bits and their 'highlight reel' from their life as being vulnerable and sharing your lows as well as your highs doesn't make your image of 'perfect' very believable.
But don't panic, I'm not expecting you to shut down all your social media accounts instantly as I believe that they have a lot to offer the world. But either make new accounts for yourself and follow people who you're genuinely interested in, people who inspire you or people who are making the world a better place or even unfollow and de friend some of the negative accounts who aren't doing anything for you. Remember, if it's not improving your life, it's making it worse. I've deleted a load of people who I hardly even know and liked the pages of entrepreneurs and business pages who are going to assist me in my goal of improving the world, so now, if I fancy a cheeky Facebook or Instagram binge, then it isn't polluting my mental diet, but rather it is putting more valuable information in between my ears. The negative people on your Facebook are the equivalent or poisoning your food and then eating lots and lots of it.
