Up until last year, you couldn't convince me to start reading everyday. No matter what you told me or how many benefits you reeled off, I still saw reading as 'geeky' or 'something for old people', and then I saw a YouTube advert from Tai Lopez and he was talking about the concept of your brain being a muscle and aiming to get a mental 6 pack, and this put a super clear image into my head and made me change my perspective on reading, and I started to read (I literally NEVER sat and read a book before this) and I liked what I was reading and how calm I felt after I had done so and tried to do it more and more regularly. I started to buy books regarding confidence, self esteem and other personal growth subjects and they started having a massive impact on my life and was even getting comments from people in my life. Looking back, in the short time i've been reading, I've come such a long way that it doesn't seem real, and I KNOW you can do the same and improve ANY area of your life.
Books related to your goal
In any area of life, you can copy what the super successful have done to get where they are and this will cut of serious amounts of time from your journey to wherever you want to go.It seems obvious but too many people go into a situation with a plan, instead of arming themselves with the same tools, strategies and knowledge as the people that came before them. If you want to become bigger and understand the gym more, buy Arnold's Bodybuilding Encyclopedia and by doing this, you would understand more about exercises, how the body works as well as picking up on important mindsets from the reader. If you want to own your own business, read books on how to do so. If your goal is to become the worlds best public speaker, read books from the likes of Tony Robbins, Les Brown and Eric Thomas. There are multiple reasons why doing this is so powerful...you get to realise that your idols are just normal human beings who kept going and never quit and this SHOULD inspire you to realise you can do the same. Another great reason is that you get inside the thought process of top level performers and you will pick up on their views of the world and what they do to make sure they stay at the top of their field. My personal favourite thing is that it does a massive amount in upgrading your mental diet. Find out more about the mental diet here***
Take notes and ask questions after
I wish someone would have told me this when I started reading, it would have saved me so many hours. When you read, you only take a small % of it in so it's important to take notes so you can go back over it and make sure it's remembered and understood, this is a very productive thing to do, as you are really taking in and getting value from every part of the book instead of reading it in a rush without taking notes and not even remembering anything from what you've read 5 minutes later. Want to get the absolute most out of your notes? Start asking yourself questions like
TOP TIP – Never rush reading, always take your time to fully understand whatever you're reading. (better to read 1 page in 10 minutes and really take time to understand it and take the information in than reading as fast as you can and not actually taking any of it in.)
Consistency is one of the main ingredients for any kind of success, and it's usually one of the main things holding people back because even if you're doing the right things, if you don't do it with enough consistency, you never really do it enough to reap the rewards from it. It's a lot like lifting weights, you could have the perfect workout plan but if you're not in the gym lifting as much as you should be, you probably won't see any gains and put it down to the fact that “The workout plan wasn't right”. If you make time to be consistent with your reading everyday, it will pay off before you know it and this will motivate you to keep being consistent. Each day you do it, your subconscious mind builds up an image of yourself that says “I'm the sort of person who reads” and each day you follow through, the image is gradually built until reading is 'just something that you do'. Remember, excellence isn't an act, it is a habit, so start creating a life full of habits and routines that support your dreams and goals instead of holding you back.
Read before bed even for 5 mins
Reading right before bed is an extremely easy and beneficial habit to start doing, as it links it to an already existing habit which is going to bed and it benefits you way beyond what you might think. Reading before bed makes sure the last bit of information you've put into your brain is something positive and this means whilst your sleeping, you have positive information floating around in your head and over time, you will start to notice you wake up in a much more positive mood which carries on throughout the day. Another thing that has helped me personally is that reading slows down your brain which makes sure your not lay in bed struggling to sleep for hours, i'll be reading and I will feel my eyes getting heavy and my brain starting to shut down and when I put my book down, I'm asleep in seconds literally, which is a massive change to before when I would stay up on my Xbox or Laptop deep into the night. It's little changes like this that change your life so focus on making these changes first before big things that you don't even think possible. The good life is waiting for you.
I'm not saying that you have to start reading 24/7 and have to become obsessed with books, but I do hope some of the points from this post have either taught you something or motivated you to start training your brain, if so, start reading everyday even if it's just for 5 minutes at first. I read books on confidence and self love at first as that was an area I struggled with and as soon as I noticed results in my own life, I was hooked. Whats an area of your life you want to improve, because I guarantee Amazon has something for it.
