Akala is a shining example of what you can achieve with consistency and working with a purpose, he is a big part of the UK rap scene but is also an author, businessman, public speaker and much more, he is proof that the only limits and boundaries are the ones that you set for yourself. I have learnt so much from Akala, and i carry on taking nuggets of wisdom from him all the time, from the various outlets that I see him on and here are 5 lessons I have personally benefitted a lot from.
1. Be authentic
Authenticity is a difficult one for a lot of people, but everywhere we look in society, the icons are great examples of authenticity and they regularly reap the rewards of being an authentic person. Akala does this brilliantly as when he is rapping, he comes with educational lyrics with his own twist on which makes them highly captivating. Whether you’re rapping, starting a business or going on a date, being authentic can help make people take a liking to you because when you’re authentic, you are being your true self & nobody can be your true self better than you! You have a unique personality, ideas and view of things, so use it to your advantage. Most people shy away from being authentic because they think people won’t like their true selves, but you will never be liked by everyone, so I would rather be liked and disliked for who I really am, instead of the fake version of myself.
2. Knowledge is power
“I got half the hood screaming knowledge is power”
This is one of Akala’s most used slogans, and in certain songs, he delivers it with such conviction that it gives you goosebumps. He covers this statement from many different angles but one of my personal favourites is when he raps
“Cos when people are enslaved
One of the first things they do is stop them reading
Cos’ it is well understood that intelligent people will take their freedom
Cos’ if we knew our power we would understand that we can’t be held down” because this shows the hidden power of reading, becoming more conscious and more knowledgable. Want to start changing/improving your life? Read, increase your knowledge & stop consuming the content ‘they’ give you, which dumbs you down.
3. Speak the truth
It’s easy to see speaking the truth as a daunting thing, and a lot of people shy away from doing so, hoping to fit and in and not be ridiculed. Akala doesn’t do this and is known for speaking the truth, regardless of whether he is speaking on his own, and by doing this, he has gained the reputation of a respected truth teller and opportunities have automatically gone his way for this reason. It has allowed him to step out of the label of a ‘rapper’ and into a league of his own, doing whatever he feels is the right thing to spread his message.
4. Try new things
As already mentioned, Akala is a pioneer in various different fields and he can be looked at as inspiration for anybody wanting to try something new. He has done politics, music, performing, poetry, writing books and the list goes on. Not only has he experimented and tried new things, but he has continuously improved to the point where he is gaining exposure from each one, which adds up over time and his loyal, almost cult following is a shining testament to what you can achieve if you appeal to people from so many different walks of life and formats of entertainment. He is known globally and has never been played on mainstream radio because of the highly political messages he talks about. Be like Akala, don’t let yourself be labelled and put into a box that restricts you from trying new things and experiencing life.
Akala has a natural air of confidence about him which has come through years of meeting people, improving himself and mastering his craft(s) and this confidence is what allows him to captivate people as soon as he starts talking or rapping. Confidence in yourself will not only allow you to attack problems and opportunities with a positive mindset, but it will also draw people towards you because people who are confident are usually looked at as leaders. A lot of different things add together to create confidence but having a strong amount of self-belief is a strong starting point, so concentrate on starting to cultivate a better sense of self esteem and belief.
I hope you’ve taken a few key points from this instalment of the success series, because Akala is an amazing human being who continues to inspire and change the lives of people all over the globe.
A quick takeaway for you to leave with is to get a message you believe in and start having some self belief in yourself and your abilities and you will be on the road the success. See you at the top ;)
