If you’re into personal growth or motivation in any way, shape or form then I’m sure you know who Dr Eric Thomas is, and if you don’t, then you’re missing out. Eric Thomas exploded on to the public speaking scene with his real life take on motivation, getting stuff done and giving everything 100%, no matter what it is. He made a massive impact on my life and I like to regularly get a dose of his content, as it really lights a fire under my ass and gets me excited and full of energy. If you can’t take something from his numerous speeches & talks, then you will be able to take something practical away from this, which is 5 lessons on success, inspired by Mr Eric Thomas himself.
1. Always give 100%
Whether it’s in your relationships, work, sports, fitness or even your business, ET is very vocal about giving it 100% and he regularly says that if you aren’t giving it 100%, then don’t bother because when you’re working at your limits, you demand a different version of yourself. When you play against someone who is better than you, you can’t cut any corners, make any mistakes or let your concentration slip and because of this, your performance is levels and levels higher than what it would normally be. Imagine if you were doing this in every type of situation in your life, the growth would me astounding.
2. Average skill, phenomenal win
"We all have the ability to produce greatness in our lives."
– Eric Thomas
ET doesn’t care how many times you’ve failed, what kind of surroundings you were brought up in or anything else that people are quick to judge and label you with, he fully believes and puts out the message that if you’ve got a heartbeat, you can improve ANYTHING in your life, and although this is quite a cliche term in the self-improvement industry, ET really says it with the conviction that makes you believe what he is saying. He has based a lot of his brand around this idea with his strapline being “Average Skill, Phenomenal Will.”
Stop letting labels, circumstances or past failures hold you back, start smashing it today!
3. It doesn’t matter where your from
To re-iterate the last point, nothing matters in your life apart from your will to make whatever change your aiming for, happen. A massive thing we allow ourselves to be restricted by is where we are from. We think you have to be from a specific place or look a certain way to be able to fit into a box but these are just lies that we tell ourselves to prevent us from ever dedicating ourselves to something completely and taking action, but ET hates this and always recalls how he was homeless and didn’t have the right ‘education’ to do what he wanted to do, but he found a way. If there isn’t already a way to do what you want to do, then make a way.
4. Either do it, or don’t
ET always puts emphasis on the fact that you should be doing something because you WANT to, not because somebody else suggested it or expected it of you. If you’re doing something because you WANT to, then you have no excuses to not give it 100% every time you put in work. Sometimes getting the results that you want is hard, sometimes you will have to make sacrifices, sometimes it won’t be enjoyable…but just do it. Either do it, or don’t do it. This is the fine line between the people who create the lives that they want, and the people who only ‘sorta’ want it.
5. Do what you love and your calling will find you
“You are the executive director and screenwriter of your life.”
Eric Thomas blew up off’ve his speeches that he was making at colleges and universities, but he never actually planned for it to happen like this, he just felt like he had a message that was exactly what these kids needed and somebody ended up recording him and putting it on YouTube, and from there, the snowball effect was well and truly in place and he carries on growing his portfolio every single day and has even recently been doing work with political campaigns, American Football events and a worldwide speaking tour…which just goes to prove what you can achieve when you are doing something that you love and putting your all into it. We sometimes think we need a magical life purpose to smack us in the face, but your purpose is normally right in front of your eyes in something that your naturally good at and enjoy doing.
